“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” – William Morris
Even though Morris was an artist, this quote still rings true when we think about party planning.
Morris was able to create beautifully intricate designs inspired by the world around him. Whether that be the birds in the trees, the leaves on the ground, or a piece of textile he found in a shop…
He was looking for inspiration everywhere he went. And, that’s because, there is lots of inspiration around us!
Even if you are feeling stuck, and out of ideas for what to plan for your children’s birthday, they’ll always be something lying around your house that can be improvised as a party game!
Let us explain a little more…
In this article, we’re going to be talking about how to use objects, materials, or other things lying around your house to create fun party activities for your kid’s birthday!
Last-Minute Birthday Activities
Party planning is stressful.
Especially, when you have to keep on top of household chores, cooking, and keeping the daily lives of your family running smoothly…
It can be hard to remember all the details of party planning, and maybe you forget a couple of things…
For example, you might forget to buy ice for the drinks, or to organise enough party activities to keep the little ones entertained.
Sound familiar? Well, you’re not alone!
It’s only human to forget about some details and that’s why we’re here to help!
Here’s a list of super easy, and FUN last-minute party activities that you can save to your desktop for those moments when you need a little inspiration…
1. Building Contest
Children love to build things. It’s a great way to pass some time while you’re preparing the food, or the kids look like they need something to keep them occupied!
The best thing about a building contest is you can use anything around the house, from plastic cups to Lego…
It’s perfect!
2. Funny Hats
This one is great if you have a closet of old party hats, or if you want something you can quickly go out to buy.
Hats are always a winner and the kids will have a blast trying them on!
3. Musical Chairs
We all know musical chairs, whether that be the memory of playing musical chairs at school when the teacher was looking to keep us busy, or at other kid’s parties…
It’s a classic for a reason. It’s FUN!

4. Ping Pong Nerf Targets
This one is just awesome.
Children love when they can get competitive, and it’s a simple way to create something exciting right in your back garden!
Here’s how you can create a unique, ping pong nerf target for your kid’s party.
5. Balloon Relay
Do you know what children love more than competitive games? Games that involve balloons!
This is one is great for getting all the little ones involved.
You can divide them up into different teams and have them have a relay race against each other.
And, to make it even MORE fun, why not through in a special prize for the winners? Like, a chocolate cake? Or, some ice cream?
You can find more ideas for different types of relay races here…
6. Charades
Another one of our favourites at PartyWizz, charades.
Do you remember playing charades as a child? We do!
It was SO much fun and we think the kids will love it.
Nowadays, kids spend so much time on front of a screen, so this game is great for having them work together with friends and take a break from their screens.
Some good, old-fashioned fun!
7. Tug of War
This one is another amazing last-minute activity for your kid’s party.
All you need is a rope and some open space. Simple, and perfect for a group of energetic kids!
8. Hot Potato
This one is also super simple, and easy!
For hot potato, all you need is a balloon and an area where the kids can run around.
Then, just blow up the balloon, gather the kids in a circle and let the fun begin!
9. Simon Says
If you’re looking to get involved in the birthday fun, then how about Simon says?
Children’s parties can get a little out of hand…after the cake, coco cola, and buzz of being with all their friends, the kids can get a little hyper.
So, the best way to keep the birthday magic going, and also have a little control, is to have them play Simon says!
Plus, you can have fun playing with them!
10. Pen Partners
For this one, grab a pen and some paper. Yep, that’s it!
The game works like this, the group is divided up into pairs and the children sit back-to-back with one another.
Then, one person has to describe what is on the note (you can make a bunch of these and put them in a hat, or bag) to the other person, but they can only give clues!
So, they can’t explicitly say what it is, or what it is used for.
It’s ideal for a quick, last-minute party activity and it doesn’t require any fancy equipment!
