One of the first things you’ll want to consider when thinking about New Year’s theme ideas is the kind of atmosphere you want to create.  Do you want to hold a sophisticated soiree, or is a seasonal shindig more your thing?  Once you’ve determined what type of party you’d like, it becomes much easier to narrow your options down.

Here at Party Wizz, there’s nothing we like more than coming up with ideas to help you plan a fantastic celebration!  And, if you’re looking for an entertainer, we have a whole host of professional acts you can book right here on our website too.

So, let’s get the party started!

Roaring Twenties

Guests can revel in the glamour of the 1920s with flapper dresses, feather boas and pearl necklaces. Serve up some cocktails and dance the night away to 1920s tunes.  Or, for a more opulent take on the Roaring 20s, go for a Great Gatsby-themed party.  Decorate with Art Deco accents and serve champagne in crystal flutes. Elegant evening gowns and dapper suits are a must for guests.

Mardi Gras

Add some zest and bring the spirit of Mardi Gras to your own celebration with purple, green and gold masks, beads and feathers; ask guests to dress in these colours too.  Then serve up Cajun-style food and play some lively music.

Hollywood Nights

Experience the glitz and glamour of Hollywood at your party with a red carpet, movie posters and star-shaped party decorations; guests should arrive dressed in glamourous evening attire. Make up some delicious Hollywood -themed cocktails, have a movie marathon playing in the background and prepare to party!

Winter Wonderland

Transform your home into a winter wonderland with sparkling lights, silver and white decorations and faux snow.  Bake gingerbread biscuits and serve with mulled wine or hot chocolate with whipped cream and ice-blue coloured granulated sugar to create a frosty effect.   Play some winter themed games – Etsy.com has a good selection if you’re not sure where to start.

Beach bash

If you’d rather forget the British winter weather, why not host a beach-themed bash?  Set up a tiki bar, play beach-themed music (eg Summer Nights, Soak Up the Sun, Island in the Sun), create tropical drinks with paper parasols and serve beach barbecue style food. Don’t forget to decorate with palm trees, flip flops and even a beach umbrella.

Casino Night

Add some extra fun and excitement to New Year’s Eve with a casino-themed celebration.  Guests can dress as casino characters from their favourite film, or in their best black-tie attire.  Provide some casino related games such blackjack, poker and roulette.  Keep it fun by gambling with faux money and providing prizes for the winners instead; no one wants to start the New Year on the wrong financial footing!  Create a play-list with your favourite gambling-themed songs and you’re good to go!

Masquerade ball

A masquerade ball is a classic party theme that’s the perfect combination of mystery and glamour.  Decorate with Venetian masks and glittering party decorations. Serve festive cocktails and have a mask-making station for guests.

Times Square

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square is something many of us dream of but can’t afford.  So why not recreate the excitement of Times Square at your party instead?  Decorate the party room with shimmering silver and gold decorations and provide guests with noisemakers and confetti.  Make signature New York cocktails and, if possible, have a giant clock counting down to midnight.

Decades

Pick a decade and have fun with it!  Experience the peace and love of the 1970s, Disco Fever from the 1980s or Dance the Night Away in the 1990s.  Whatever decade you decide on, ask guests to dress accordingly and play hits from the era.  This theme provides the perfect opportunity for a karaoke session too!

Psychic

Want to know what the New Year will bring?  Consider throwing a psychic themed party.  You could hire a psychic online who will read palms or tarot cards to give an insight into the past, present or future.  Alternatively, dress for the role and create your own predictions.  Essential décor includes battery operated candles, a crystal ball (or two!), beaded curtains and a velvet table cover.  Keep lighting low by draping lamps with flame retardant fabrics.  We predict this theme this will go down well!

Murder Mystery

Host a murder mystery dinner.  Order a kit online, allocate characters and get your guests to dress up.  Kits can be ordered online.

Glow

See in the New Year in spectacular style with a glow theme.  You’ll need black UV lighting and plenty of bright, neon-coloured objects including guests’ costumes and decorations. You could also do some face painting with glow-in-the dark face paint, or even neon highlighters!

Adapt classic party games, such as beer pong, by using glowing cups and balls, or why not play Pictionary on a flip chart with neon pens.  Just go with the glow!

Harry Potter

If you and your friends are Harry Potter fans, this is definitely one for you!  Switch off the lights, add atmosphere with (battery operated) candles, play Harry Potter-themed music and get guests to dress as their favourite character.   Decorations could include old books, a soft toy owl, candles, cobwebs and portraits of past headmasters.   Add to the fun by arranging an-inter house quiz on all things Harry Potter.  If there are too many guests from one house, provide a sorting hat with houses written on slips of paper; guests select a slip and must join that house for the duration of the quiz.

Pyjama Party

A New Year’s Eve pyjama party is a great way to celebrate in a more relaxed style. Dress code? Pyjamas!  This theme is great if you have children as they can join in the fun by wearing their favourite snuggly pjs and staying up late.  You could either watch movies with popcorn and snacks or play board games until it’s time to ring in the New Year.  And when it’s all over, everyone is conveniently ready for bed!
