<\/script><\/span><!-- end HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><\/a><\/span>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked Oisin to tell us about how he got into the art and how he is adapting to the restrictions of the changing world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get to know Oisin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tell us a little about your background?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m from the lovely town of Athlone in the heart of Ireland, although I recently moved to Dublin.&nbsp; I studied law, English and Psychology at uni, the latter becoming extremely useful for the magic I would later start learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did you get into magic?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 3 things that really helped shape my interest in magic.&nbsp; Firstly, I grew up in the era of Harry Potter which was a huge inspiration.&nbsp; Then, like many magicians, I was given a magic set as a kid.&nbsp; And last, but not least, I had an older brother who used to make me play poker with him.&nbsp; Rather than see him win every time, I realised that by learning a few secret card moves I could appear more of a match!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So you are a mentalist and also a magician \u2013 how do you define the difference?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t see a huge difference between the two.&nbsp; Mentalism uses magic tricks but then adds psychology and suggestion techniques to make the tricks appear more real.&nbsp; I always say that mentalism is the magic of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So you don\u2019t claim that what you do is paranormal?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, I simply claim that I use a mixture of statistics, magic tricks, misdirection, story-telling and showmanship to give the impression that I have paranormal ability.&nbsp; But once they get to know me they tend to relax!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did you come to be a professional entertainer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I actually started out as an extra and actor for various TV series.&nbsp; When I was in Fair City, the producers saw me doing a few tricks off-camera, and then they asked me if I would do some tricks in the background during one of the episodes.&nbsp; I did, it was well-received, and it gave me the idea that magic could be an interesting career move.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you remember your first show?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, within 3 weeks of the Fair City experience, I was doing my first paid show.&nbsp; It was a children\u2019s birthday party and it went down really well &#8211; much better than I expected!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who are your biggest inspirations?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Allen would be my greatest inspiration as an entertainer.&nbsp; Then in terms of magicians it would be Derren Brown and our own Keith Barry.&nbsp; From a practical perspective, it was magician Pat Fallon who taught me so much; he was my first real advisor in the magic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes a great magician\/mind reader?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to be genuinely interested in your audience.&nbsp; Of course, the tricks you do might be more sophisticated for adults \u2013 but ultimately both need to be entertained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who are easier to fool, kids or adults?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adults!&nbsp; They are constantly on high alert trying to work out how things are done.&nbsp; Perversely, this actually means that they miss a lot of the subtlety &#8211; because they are constantly on edge and focussed in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has Covid 19 affected your business and how are you adapting to the \u2018new normal\u2019?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, the effect on my business was crippling.&nbsp; But then as I realised that the restrictions were here to stay with us for a while, I started working on virtual shows that I could do on Zoom.&nbsp; And I continued to keep in touch with my customers to let them know that they can still hire me, albeit in a different way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do you enjoy doing what you do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I just love entertaining people and making them laugh.&nbsp; There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than seeing kids howl with laughter when I hit myself \u2018accidentally\u2019 in the head with an inflatable magic wand!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tell us a bit about your virtual shows.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For kids and family occasions, I have created a show that is as fun and interactive as you can get.&nbsp; For corporate and private adult audiences, I\u2019ve produced a show that is the most fascinating 45 minutes an audience will ever have.
